Mobile internet is seen as cost-prohibitive?

Ha! Who knew!

I have said before that the outrageous data rates on mobile phones are holding back adoption of the technology in Australia, and still believe that it is true. Gizmodo posted on the results of a survey which apparently confirms it.

Now, I haven’t seen the survey (so I don’t know how they structured their questions), but I’m guessing that one reason that 91% of people said the cost was too high was because they believe that this is true for practically anything. Everyone wants everything to cost less, right? Unless they are selling it of course :)

When I was looking for a new mobile provider a few months ago, I had decided on 3, as they seem to be the only company in Australia who are offering a data pack. The only one I saw at least. The pres release on Giz says that the survey was carried out by a third party, but it is pretty clear that it was commissioned by Three.

I think that even if data rates were affordable, the takeup would be slow due to the standard of handsets in Australia. Once the “next generation” of handsets (ie iPhone, Android, big flat touchscreens) are available, people will be interested.

I use the net on my phone 5-6 days a week, mainly to check Gmail, Google Reader, or Google Maps (keen followers will know that I already posted on that!).

What do you think? Do you use mobile net?
