Beer Review: BrewDog Bitch Please

When I heard that BrewDog had brewed a Scottish barley wine with 3 Floyds, then aged it in whisky barrels, I had to have some. I’m glad I bought a few bottles, because it was outstanding. I drank it a while ago, but have been a bit slow getting the review up.

Look

Bitch Please is a deep copper to brown colour, and pours with a tight, off-white head. It has a strong lace, and looks beautiful in the glass.

Smell

The aroma is of subtle peated malt, backed by sweeter, caramel/toffee malts. There is also some dark fruit aroma, Hops are almost non-existant, as you would expect from a Scottish style.

Taste

The smokiness comes through in the flavour as well, perhaps more so than it does in the aroma. It is not overpowering though, and works well with the slight citrus flavours at the back of the beer.

Feel

Medium bodied, low to medium carbonation. The smokiness stays in your mouth, and is complemented by some bitterness. Both of these flavours linger.

Drink

An incredible sipping beer (it is 11.5%), I found this a very satisfying beer. I loved the way the big smokey flavour worked with the high alcohol content, the sweet malts, and the “balancing” bitterness.

Another outstanding beer from BrewDog.

Beer Review: BrewDog Abstrakt AB:06

As always, I was pretty quick to make sure I got some of the latest Abstrakt release from BrewDog, AB:06. It is a Tripple Dry Hopped Imperial Black IPA, and weighs in at 11.2%. I was pretty excited to try it, I felt that a few of the beers Abstrakt range were a bit lacking, but this one sounded excellent. I was not disappointed. I split the bottle with my dad, and am glad I have two more in the beer cellar.

Look

AB:06 is deep brown, with slight red highlights against a light. It pours with a full tan head, and leaves patchy lacing. It is slightly hazy.

Smell

This beer is hugely hopped. Fruity, floral aromas flow out of this beer as I pulled the cork out (with a corkscrew, as with all beers in the Abstrakt range). There is also resinous pine, and some roasted malt.

Taste

A hop bomb, as true as they come. From beginning to end, the hops dominate the flavour of AB:06. It tastes like a huge American IPA, but the roasted malt adds another level of complexity, and provides some balance.

Feel

Medium bodied, with a moderate amount of carbonation. There was no pop at all when I opened the bottle, but it poured with a healthy head, and didn’t feel flat at all. It also left the mark of an American IPA, a thick, resinous coating in my mouth, that lasted far longer than the beer itself.

Drink

I found AB:06 quite drinkable, but as a sipper (of course). Not an easy drinking beer, and nor should it be. It was hugely enjoyable, up there with my favourites in the Abstrakt range.

Beer Review: Lagunitas Censored

Lagunitas Censored (Kronic) is another beer from the tasting selection I got. It is an American Amber Ale.

Look

The label calls this beer a ‘Rich Copper Ale’, and it lives up to this title. It is deep copper in colour, with a tight head. It doesn’t leave any lacing, but the carbonation maintains the head.

Smell

Sweet, grainy malts dominate, with a subtle touch of American hops. The aroma is dominated by toffee and caramel.

Taste

The flavour profile continues on from the aroma, with the same strengths as the aroma. Bready, grainy, malt drives this beer, with just a garnishing of hops.

Feel

Medium mouth feel, with low to medium carbonation. Nice and smooth, but the sweetness borders on cloying.

Drink

One bottle was quite easy to drink, but any more would become a bit challenging. Enjoyable though, a nice interpretation of the style.
